Today, Rowan Shiell and Bermuda Bob discuss the 30 Point satisfaction of the Duke win at Home against Notre Dame and the tough win at Florida State on the road …
After blowing out Notre Dame at home, people were expecting a bigger win over Florida State, do you think this was unreasonable ???
It is a shame that the more success Duke has, the higher the expectations. Florida State has to be given some credit here, they did something a few teams have achieved this season: Move Jahlil Okafor off the block. Michael Ojo is 7′ tall and weighs almost 300 pounds. When he was in the game he used his strength to push Jahlil off the block.
The Freshman scored most of his 13 points in transition, or when the Nigerian import was on the bench. Tyus Jones, Justise Winslow, and especially Quinn Cook picked up the slack, offensively.
The Notre Dame game was an excellent effort and a great shooting exhibition. It may have been a demonstration giving credence to the thoughts we have had about Rasheed being a distraction.
As for Florida State, any opponent playing in Tallahassee will find it unwelcoming with intense fan pressure, just like at Cameron. That said, one of the criticisms of Coach K’s non-conference scheduling has been his noticeable lack of true “Away” games. I think this played a part in Monday’s game.
How would you rate the performance of the bench ???
Marshall Plumlee did a great job of holding down the forte while Okafor sat for most of the first half with two early fouls. Grayson Allen has lost ‘his deer in the headlights’ tag as he looks a little more comfortable on the court.
Matt Jones didn’t make any of his 6 shots but had 3 big offensive rebounds.
Allen played more minutes than usual but the trust isn’t there yet as Cook and Tyus Jones played around 40 minutes a piece !!!
Duke went into the LockerRoom up 32-24 with “Oaks” on the Bench in foul trouble, which caused the team to pass and find the cutting player.
Matt couldn’t find the “Hole” but looked like Duke’s new Tyler Thornton.
“Plums” again contributed 10 major minutes, playing tough Defense and showing better hands on Offense.
Grayson got 11 minutes off the Bench and began to look more comfortable. Just before his time was finished, he made a monster block from nowhere, leaping even higher than he needs to Dunk.
Who would you give the game ball to ???
That would be Quinn Cook, who scored a season high 26 points. Tyus Jones is a close second registering a personal best of a dozen assists to go with 16 points and a team high 6 rebounds. This performance sent their coach into an ‘I told you so’ mode after the game.
“Those two guards have been rock solid for me, [Jones] and Quinn,” Krzyzewski said. “Remember when we started the year, I don’t know if you remember, but everyone’s saying, ‘How’s that going to work out ???’ Well, it’s worked out pretty darn well.“
Offensively they are good. Defensively they still need work judging by the way Florida State got back into the game, but who am I to rain on Coach K’s parade !!!
I agree on Quinn, but think he ought to share it with Tyus. After all, they often played off each other, as proven by the 12 Assists Tyus was responsible while none for Quinn.
There is a consensus that Duke is a different team since the start of the conference year, when they lost two in a row, can you see this ???
Their limitations are still very evident … no rim protection, or pick and roll … Defense on the perimeter is still a sieve, however they are doing a good job of covering these weaknesses.
There is also a little more bite in their bark. Against Miami and NC State, when they were taken out of the game, they just didn’t seem to have any fight in them. Now, they go down 10 to an undefeated Virginia in the waning moments of the game, and still manage to win. On the road, against Florida State, even though they gave up a good lead, they remained composed and held on for the victory.
I think the turnaround was at Notre Dame when they fought hard but still lost. After that game Tyus Jones and Quinn Cook have played with a lot more zest. Winslow seems to be overcoming his injury game by game.
Duke is a maturing work in progress. Early on, opponents had no clue how to contain “Oaks” but now every opponent seems to have a game plan for him. Now, if “Oaks” goes to the Bench, they are showing a different but very effective look thanks to good Guard play. “Plums” playing hardnosed has been a big plus. The return to form by Justise is a huge plus. Matt has seemed to have begun to be Amile’s substitute, making that Forward position hard to consistently defend.
All that said, they are not yet tournament ready, but they’re getting there. Once again I have to wonder what the heck was going on with Rasheed that catapulted him from the team and the team into a more unified squad. Something tells me we won’t know anytime soon !!!
Coach K turns 68 on Friday but Jason Williams (now of ESPN) thinks he has a lot left in the tank, do you think this is possible ???
First of all let me wish a very Happy Birthday to our own Bermuda Bob who was born two days (albeit years later) before Coach K but has never brought this up in all the years that I have known him.
I hope you have a wonderful day celebrating your own milestone.
Larry Brown who currently coaches SMU is 74 and Jim Boeheim is 70, so yes I think Coach K has another 5 years left in him if he desires it.
Incidentally Coach K’s mentor, Bob Knight, resigned from Texas Tech at 68.
Thanks, Ro !!! I’m a bit younger (by 8 years) and I can tell you that it all comes down to your mind and body together cooperating with what you want to accomplish. That said, it appears that Coach K has no visible reason why he could not continue as Jay Williams notes. He does not seem to have lost any physicality, nor a bit of his wit and presence … just ask the Reporters on the Duke “beat.” I think that he would never stay even one day past the time when he could no longer be everything he feels he needs to be to the team, each player, the fans, and the University.
I know it sounds hackneyed, but age is just a number. When you’re doing what you love, with those you love, supported by those you love, longevity comes naturally. He will know when it’s time …

Where has Amile gone? I have compared the season statistics of Amile after the Notre Dame road loss to tonight’s Syracuse win. Although not a dramatic drop off, his FG% has dropped from .639 to .628 and his FT% from .578 to .568. His points per game have gone down from 8.75 to 7.76. The most glaring stat to me is that he has 0 assist since the ND loss (22 ytd) and 2 blocks (11 ytd) since that loss. I am wondering Amile is mentally suffering the most by the dismissal of RS. Did I read that he was RS roommate? I think he has to step up the rest of the season for Duke to win the ACC tournament and possibly the NCAA.
Hi Bill !!!
Yes, we both have wondered why Amile is playing less as well !!! Granted, Matt is a better shooter, but Amile is the Yin to the Yang of “Oaks” down low, which Matt cannot be … He’s a Captain and a very important cog if this team is going to be strong at tournament time …
Yes, I also saw that he was Rasheed’s roommate and even a classmate in some classes. Considering that he is still pursuing his studies means they have constant contact in class. Since we don’t really know why Rasheed was dismissed, we can’t really speculate on if it might affect Amile, but you certainly make a good human-nature observance !!!
Thanks for commenting !!!
Rock On !!!
Unbelievable! I have to give it to Duke they found a way to win against Va Tech. However, they did not play good defense. 54% against the 3 and numerous dribble penetration layups. Have we heard this before? Is it psychological or what? Of course I follow Duke to closely to really know what happens to other teams. It seems that when they get a key player back into the lineup from injury, they just play like they are standing in wet sand. We saw this 3 years ago with Irving coming back after the toe injury. Two years ago this Duke did not play good defense when Ryan Kelly came back and they are bounced in the first round. For Duke to make it into the 2nd or 3rd weekend of the NCAA, they have to step up their game.
Hi Bill !!!
Great to hear from you again !!!
Duke proved last game that they are two (2) very different teams, which is very heartening considering the always present possibility that “Oaks” could get into foul trouble. With him, everything goes thru him and their player movement and passing suffers … without him, you have results like the Clemson game, where they play great Defense and move the ball wonderfully.
Please know, however, that this is not a knock on “Oaks” … it is characteristic of every Low Post centric team in basketball history, back to Wilt Chamberlain and further !!!
As I mentioned earlier here, having what I call a effective “Plan B” is a very positive thing as the reality is that each and every coach will have more than one way to defend “Oaks” !!!
We now simply hope the teams gets home safely and look for Saturday at 7PM on ESPN as Duke gets Syracuse at Cameron.
Thanks again for the comment !!!
Shouting at the TV, Slippage, Amile not playing minutes, no defense off the penetration – wow – I guess good basketball minds think alike. My days as a volunteer coach for the Y were moons ago, but mentally I must still have it. One of my dogs runs and hides when the Duke games come on and I feel like I am in Cameron and need to yell. My wife wonders how I can enjoy a game when yelling at the TV.
In my opinion this year I have seen Coach K do an amazing job, only to be out coached by others in the three losses and near losses. His implementation of the zone, going small when the team needed a pickup, switching man to man at Wisconsin, bringing in Plumlee to play with Oaks in the last 10 mins of the St John’s game. Yet for Coach K to talk about slippage or a thin bench makes me think what does he want from all of his players. I go back to my main gripe about him – you have lost three transfers in the last 3 years because you did not develop them. Two are now starters and one almost single handed beat you at the Carrier Dome. Let’s hope Cook or Jones stays on “Silent G” like glue tonight. Otherwise Duke is going to be fighting for 2nd place in the ACC and a 2nd seeding in the NCAA.
Hi Bill !!!
Yes, apparently we, like many other CBB fans, become demonstrative in our verve for our team. It’s a good thing as long as we all understand that sports is entertainment, and that while winning makes us feel good about our team and “fan-ship,” it rarely substantively affects our lives the next morning. Obvious exceptions are those working with the team, school, etc. or gamblers (Opps, don’t let the NCAA hear that people actually gamble on games !!!)
I think “slippage” was just a term Coach K employed with one eye on a snowy ride home from Va. Tech. Coach K is proving why he is paid the big bucks as he constantly comes up with surprises. Let’s hope he continues to have a bottomless pit in that bag of tricks. This year’s ACC Tourney and Big Dance ought to be epic !!!
In the meantime … See you Wednesday night at 8PM !!!
Rock On !!!
Duke played good defense tonight. Lets hope that Quinn, Oaks and Grayson get their ankles 100% by Saturday night.
Hi Bill !!!
Yup !!! Defense looked good. Pretty sure playing at home Saturday and this Wednesday will pay premiums in their conditioning. While Saturday night is a big one to look forward to, we have to deal with the always pesky Wake Forest team.
Rock On !!!
How many hack reporters are going to continue to publish incomplete stories on Duke and Sulaimon? All we know is Sulaimon was dismissed from the team and now stories an article in the Duke Chronicle has been published about RS and sexual allegations.
What happened with the Duke Lacrosse team in 2006 or 2007, should make anyone do a complete substantiation of all rumors before publishing the half wit articles.
I have counted 31 articles tied to DukeReport website as of this afternoon. Do any of them have the real facts – maybe 2 or 3, the ones on what Coach K would not say and what Kevin White did say.
Journalism and the media have lost their real purpose in this country.
Hi Bill !!!
Ro and I were speaking about this very topic this afternoon. We plan our own position “paper” on it after the Wake game. We honestly think that some folks ought to be reporting on Quinn Cook’s Senior Night Wednesday night and the Wake game afterwards. After all, he has excelled well beyond some people’s expectations, and he ought to get the praise for it.
The Rasheed issue will be with Duke well after,so we will take the appropriate time to comment. We certainly do not wish to distract the team any more.
I will agree with you, however, that Journalism and the general media has stopped reporting facts and become, in some cases, nothing more than the rags you find at the grocery store register. A true Journalist reports the facts in a way that allows the reader to make his own opinion, based on them !!! A Commentator is one who reports his/her opinion. Both are the exact opposite of the other, and while Social Media often smudges the difference, it still remains the norm.
See you then … and … enjoy the game … and … Thanks to Quinny !!!
I was at the game Wednesday night. Somehow I came out on top for the auction of the booth tickets. We had a great time. Although the game was not a contest you can never find more excitement than being in Cameron with the Crazies.
Grayson Allen really needed that game. I hope Coach K gets him to log a lot of minutes during the tournaments. One more sharpshooter and some solid athletic skills for the team.
Maybe it is old school but I do not see any of the players wearing high tops. Must be old fashion, but it makes you wonder if the Nike shoes have a wide enough base. Of course when you go back and look at the ankle sprain Oaks incurred, the defensive player moved underneath him by a step as he was coming down. Mr. Ref that is a foul on the defense and you should call it. Also Oaks has got to watch out on the chest bumping when he drives with the ball. It was called once against Wake. I am sure Williams will have the refs ear tomorrow at Carolina.
Hi Bill !!!
How lucky to be at a game like that !!! Good for you …
Grayson represents the future of the programme. He is also pivotal in a “Plan B” (4 Guard) line-up in the event it’s needed, either to shake things up or compensate for foul trouble !!!
There has long been speculation that Nike is more style oriented than these high flying kids need for proper support.
As for the Referees, there is more than just a bit wanting these days. It may be because of the speed of the game, or even the amount of physicality allowed. Refs ought never lose control of a game, but yet also ought not be the determining factor in a game.
Looking forward to tomorrow night for sure !!! As for Coach Roy, it’s his home, I guess that means something !!!
Rock On !!!
Winslow better get control of his emotions or he is going to get thrown out of a game for a flagrant 2 foul. This was either the 3rd or 4th time this year he has acted in retaliation for another player getting the best of him. Duke cannot afford for him to sit a whole game. I would think Coach K is going to put him in the bench house if he does not change his attitude.
Hi Bill !!!
You could not be more correct that Duke cannot afford to have “The Chief” on the floor. It’s hard to understand why he is reacting this way, but that kind of stuff only worked for Bruce Lee. Kareem tried it in the movies, but it didn’t work for him either !!!
Time will tell, but here’s to hoping he has been “delivered” from that type of silliness by Coach K …
Until Thursday, enjoy the ACC Tournament !!!
Rock On !!!
This morning while driving to work, ESPN950 radio was talking about the website http://www.fanangel.com. While they were discussing this website, they mentioned Okafor’s name being as one of the players names on the site. I have not signed up for the site, but my understanding is that a fan can sign up and donate money to a player of their choice. If the player is in college, then the player cannot get the “funds held in escrow” until eligibility is complete.
I see possible NCAA infractions from this website and a huge compliance headache for NCAA schools.
Hi Bill !!!
This is something new to us, and certainly something not to let go by without keeping a wary eye on it. Thanks for the heads-up. Please keep us informed, if you have the time during this very best month of the year !!!
Go Duke !!!
Rock On !!!
Which Duke team will show up for the NCAA? II know this team has shown some flashes of greatness and being unbeatable at times. Yet they did not start playing Duke ball and then only for a few minutes in the 2nd half. Play like the did tonight and they will be taking an early exit from the NCAA.
Hi Bill !!!
We are on the same wave length, Mate !!!
We just posted our thoughts on the ACC Tournament in another “After Sleeping on It …” article. We think you’ll appreciate it. 5-6 days to get it together or end up like before …
In the meantime …
Rock On !!!
